Travel Nurse Housing Costs: What to Budget Before You Accept an Assignment
Housing is often one of the biggest variables in a travel healthcare assignment. A strong weekly pay package can look very different after furnished rent, utilities, parking and commuting are included. This guide shows you what to compare before you commit.
What should count as a housing cost?
Rent or extended-stay rate
Use the actual amount you expect to pay for the full period you will occupy the property, including any required short-term premium.
Utilities & internet
Confirm whether electricity, water, gas and internet are included. Furnished does not always mean all-inclusive.
Deposits & fees
Check cleaning fees, application fees, pet fees and deposits. Separate refundable deposits from true expenses when comparing options.
Parking & commute
A cheaper rental farther from the hospital may cost more overall after fuel, tolls, hospital parking and extra commuting time.
Furnished rental vs. extended-stay hotel
There is no single cheapest option for every assignment. Furnished rentals can provide more space and a residential setup, while extended-stay hotels can simplify utilities, furniture and shorter booking periods. Compare the total cost for the dates you actually need, cancellation terms and commute—not just the nightly or monthly headline price.
How much should you spend on travel nurse housing?
Instead of using a fixed percentage rule, work backward from the assignment. Enter the weekly pay, expected housing cost and your other assignment expenses. What matters is how much the assignment is expected to leave you after the costs you will actually incur.
For example, two assignments with the same weekly pay can produce very different results if one requires expensive furnished housing, paid hospital parking or a long commute.
Questions to ask before booking
Is the price truly all-in?
Ask which utilities, taxes and recurring fees are included and which are charged separately.
How far is the actual facility?
Calculate the commute to the specific hospital or clinic, not simply the city center.
What happens if the contract changes?
Read cancellation, early-departure and extension terms before paying a deposit or committing to a long stay.
Does your permanent-home cost continue?
If you maintain expenses at home during the assignment, include those in your personal budget even though they are not local housing expenses.
Use city guides as a starting point
Our city guides provide planning estimates for furnished housing and other living costs in Columbus, Phoenix, Nashville, Denver, Boston and San Diego. They are planning benchmarks—not live rental quotes—so replace the estimate with an actual housing quote whenever you have one.
A note about stipends and taxes
TravelAssignmentWorth uses housing and other expenses for budgeting purposes. It does not determine whether a housing stipend or other payment qualifies for tax-free treatment. Tax-home and reimbursement rules depend on individual circumstances. Consult a qualified tax professional for advice about your situation.
